Band 7 Brachytherapy Advanced Practice Radiographer Applications are invited from enthusiastic, experienced therapy radiographers who would like to build on their clinical and leadership expertise as a key member of the brachytherapy team in the Exeter Oncology Centre.

The department utilises a high doserate Elekta Flexitron treatment unit for brachytherapy treatment delivery. Treatment planning is undertaken using a brachytherapy computerised planning system, Oncentra planning software and image guided techniques utilising MRI, CT and/or ultrasound. A wide range of treatment techniques are commissioned, including interstitial, intracavitary, intraluminal and surface moulds. The service provides treatments for prostate (including monotherapy treatment), gynaecological, upper GI, lung and skin cancers.

The service benefits from Radiographer-led applicator insertion for endometrial / vaginal cancers, for both initial and subsequent treatment fractions. Future developments for the service include the provision of partial and salvage treatments for prostate cancers, the development of MRI image fusion techniques, the commissioning of new equipment for the treatment of cervix cancers and the re-commissioning of interstitial head and neck single leader treatments. The department also actively participates in clinical trials and clinical audit. Superficial (LVT) Radiotherapy is provided using a 100KV Therapax treatment unit. We are working toward the introduction of 'Papillon' for the treatment of anal cancers, and will be exploring the potential of using 'Papillon' for the treatment of skin lesions.

The post holder will participate in the day to day provision of a safe and accurate brachytherapy and superficial radiotherapy treatment services, and will provide information and support for patients undergoing treatment preparation and delivery. They will liaise across all areas of the department for the purpose of streamlining the patient journey and facilitating good communication between healthcare professionals. They will be employed in an advanced practice capacity, which will involve further development of the current Radiographer-led aspects of service delivery or other areas of service delivery across the radiotherapy department as a whole. They will specifically work with the brachytherapy Superintendent Radiographer to develop and implement new brachytherapy treatment techniques and processes and will be delegated some responsibility within these processes.

The post holder will be required to deputise for the Superintendent Radiographer as the need arises, and they will supervise subordinate staff and students and assume full responsibility for Assistant Practitioners when rostered to work alongside them.
