Trust Specialty Doctor in Emergency Medicine.

The Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital is looking to appoint a substantive SAS (Middle Grade) in Emergency Medicine to join our team of 24 Middle Grades (18.1 FTE), consisting of 15 specialty doctors (10.9 FTE), 3 ST6s (2 FTE), 2 rotating ST4s, 2 rotating ST3s and 2 Extreme Medicine (WEM) doctors (1.5 FTE).


The successful applicant will be expected to possess competences across the whole range of UK based Emergency Medicine practice. Applicants will be expected to have completed at least two years’ full time postgraduate training to include at least six months in Emergency Medicine. Previous applicants need not apply.


The Emergency Department is a modern progressive Department supported by a dedicated team of 11.6 WTE Consultant Emergency Physicians providing shop floor leadership from 0800 – 2300 hours, 365 days a year. The Department enjoys round the clock Middle Grade cover and a 16 person Junior Doctor rota, with 3 SHOs overnight and is supported by a team of Emergency Nurse Practitioners.


The Trust has recently invested heavily both in terms of process and resource to ensure the efficient flow of patients through the Emergency Department, including opening additional hospital beds. Currently the year to date figure for the Department of Health Care Quality Indicator for 4hr waits in ED is running at over 90%.Consequently the Emergency Department is an enjoyable, productive and rewarding environment in which to work.


The Department is a Major Trauma Unit and employs a 24hr Consultant led Trauma Team and enjoys excellent working relationships with all of the in-Hospital specialties.


There is an excellent Departmental Educational Programme for Junior and Middle Grade Doctors and any successful candidate would be encouraged to undertake audit and other scholarly activities. Time is provided for this, both in terms of supporting professional activities and time for clinical admin.


The department is involved in a number of multi-centre national research projects offering successful applicants experience in research. The hospital is the principle hospital of the University of Exeter Medical School (UEMS) and there will be opportunities to participate in formal teaching activities. Additionally CME/CPD activities will be encouraged & supported financially, through a dedicated study leave budget. There are several accredited ultrasound trainers in the department & a keen drive to expand this area of practice. The hospital participates in the national Trauma Audit Research Network (TARN).


The department has established a reputation for supporting those interested in pursuing the Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) and a number of the existing middle-grade cohort are being mentored in activities to complete this. Applications are actively encouraged from others wishing to explore this route.
