The Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital is looking to appoint a substantive Specialty Registrar/CESR Doctor in Emergency Medicine to join our team of 12 whole time equivalent Middle Grade Doctors.

‘To those that live in Devon, it’s probably no secret, but a survey in Country Life Magazine found that those living in the county simply enjoy a better quality of life than anywhere else in England’

The Royal Devon & Exeter NHS Foundation Trust is a Teaching Hospital based in the historic cathedral city of Exeter in the heart of the South West of England. As such it enjoys a wealth of sporting and cultural resources along with access to the many beaches of Devon and Cornwall and the open moorland of Exmoor and Dartmoor. Excellent surf can be reached within an hour at Bantham in South Devon, or Croyde in North Devon, with high class windsurfing and kitesurfing at Exmouth, a mere 10 miles from the Emergency Department. Sandy Park in Exeter, home of the Exeter Chiefs who play in rugby’s Premiership, is one of only two club grounds in the country to host international fixtures in the 2015 Rugby World Cup. Great opportunities are also on hand for mountain and road biking, sailing and a whole gamut of cultural experiences including music, theatre and arts.

The Emergency Department is a modern progressive Department supported by a dedicated team of 13 full time Consultant Emergency Physicians providing shop floor leadership from 0800 – 2300 hours, 365 days a year. The Department enjoys round the clock Middle Grade cover, with 3 SHOs overnight and is supported by a team of Emergency Nurse Practitioners.

The Department has established a reputation for supporting those interested in pursuing the Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) and a number of the existing Middle Grade cohort are being mentored in activities to complete this. The post will provide the appointed clinician with the training opportunities and support required to successfully complete all aspects of the CESR process, with an experienced educational supervisor to help direct completion of the College portfolio. Links are available with acute medicine, paediatrics, anaesthesia and intensive care to undergo the periods of secondment required to complement successful CESR application.

There is an excellent Departmental Educational Programme for Middle Grade Doctors with weekly sessions of 2 hours mapped to the College curriculum, with regular high fidelity simulation sessions. Any successful candidate would be encouraged to undertake audit and other scholarly activities. Time is provided for this, both in terms of supporting professional activities and time for clinical admin; with a study leave budget for approved meetings, conferences and education.

The Trust has recently invested heavily both in terms of process and resource to ensure the efficient flow of patients through the Emergency Department, including opening additional hospital beds. Currently the year to date figure for the Department of Health Care Quality Indicator for 4hr waits in ED is running at over 96%. Consequently the Emergency Department is an enjoyable, productive and rewarding environment in which to work.

The Department is a Major Trauma Unit and employs a 24hr Consultant led Trauma Team and enjoys excellent working relationships with all of the in-Hospital specialties.

The Department is involved in a number of multi-centre national research projects offering successful applicants experience in research. The hospital is the principle hospital of the University of Exeter Medical School (UEMS) and there will be opportunities to participate in formal teaching activities. Additionally CME/CPD activities will be encouraged & supported financially, through a dedicated study leave budget. There are several accredited ultrasound trainers in the Department & a keen drive to expand this area of practice. The hospital participates in the national Trauma Audit Research Network (TARN).

The successful applicants will be expected to possess competences across the whole range of UK based Emergency Medicine practice. Applicants will be expected to have completed at least two years’ full time postgraduate training to include at least six months in Emergency Medicine. Previous applicants need not apply.
